Position Summary

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) invites applications for a tenure-track position at the level of Assistant Professor or higher, commensurate with qualifications and experience, beginning in Fall 2020. The Assistant Professor in Data Science is expected to contribute to the development of the department curriculum.

Essential Duties

Responsibilities include teaching a variety of undergraduate courses in mathematics, statistics and data science consistent with the needs of the department, as well as participating in curriculum development, advising students, providing individual help to students during office hours, performing scholarly research and publication, and providing service to the department, school, university and profession.

Official duties and responsibilities of faculty members at the University include teaching, scholarship, service and professional activities. In all matters, faculty are expected to maintain the highest standards of professional ethics consistent with the UIW Mission.

Full-time faculty at UIW are expected to teach four courses in the fall semester and four courses in the spring semester. Full-time faculty are expected to be flexible. Course assignments are based on student and department needs, multiple preps are to be expected.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

-Knowledge to teach undergraduate courses in mathematics, statistics and data science;

-Possess excellent communication and strong interpersonal skills;

-Demonstrated excellence and proficiency in Data Science and related fields;

-Demonstrated active research program with the highest standards of excellence in teaching;

-Strong commitment to undergraduate teaching;

-Competence in the use of instructional technology;

-Desire to collaborate with students and faculty within the department and from other disciplines to support the mission of the University;

-Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse communities and cultures;

-Employee shall adhere to all applicable rules and regulations of the University, the Conference, and the NCAA.

Required Education

Ph. D. degree in Data Sciences (with at least 18 graduate hours in mathematics or statistics) or in Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, or Statistics with a specialty in Data Science or a closely related area, at the time of appointment

Required Work Experience

-Experience teaching at the college level;

-Strong background in at least one field of Data Science;

-Strong background in at least two programming languages including but not limited to Python, R, MATLAB, SQL, Java, Julia, Scala, C++ and confident in some other programming languages
