Applications are invited for an enthusiastic and motivated Bioinformatician to join the Gut Microbes and Health Programme at Quadram Institute Bioscience (QIB), based in Norwich, UK.

Gut Microbes and Health Programme

The microbes that live inside our guts are mostly a mystery to science. We know they have an impact on our health and wellbeing that extends far beyond the gut but science currently doesn't fully understand how or why. You can be part of this grand scientific endeavour to understand the microbes that live inside us all.

The Gut Microbes and Health Programme (https://quadram.ac.uk/research_areas/gut-microbes-health/) aims to obtain mechanistic knowledge on the role of the gut microbiome during normal healthy ageing in order to develop strategies that will improve lifelong health and wellbeing.

Our Programme is organised into three complementary themes, and is underpinned by two studies of very young (pregnancy and early life) and ageing/elderly East Anglia-based populations that form the basis for coordinated investigations addressing the mechanistic basis of microbiome-host interactions in health. Next generation sequencing, and bioinformatic/computational approaches, complemented by ongoing lab-based studies, will be used to probe the complexity of the relationship between the gut microbiome and host.

The role

As a bioinformatician supporting this Programme, you will work with vast datasets of metagenomic sequence data (truly BigData) and will gain experience with cutting edge sequencing technologies, such as those from Nanopore and PacBio. At your disposal will be a massive OpenStack cloud computing system with hundreds of terabytes of disk space and thousands of computing cores.

You will be embedded within the core bioinformatics team for the Quadram Institute, so will be surrounded by experienced bioinformaticians, providing a friendly environment to enhance your skills. In this rapidly changing field you will have the opportunity to work with researchers on publishing new methodologies, which we make available as open source software on GitHub (https://github.com/quadram-institute-bioscience/).

The ideal candidate

Ideal candidates will have a postgraduate degree in computing, computational biology, bioinformatics or a related computational subject, a strong proficiency in Linux, and an ability to program in at least one programming language to an advanced level. They will also have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, as the post will involve working with staff across the Institute.

Additional information

Salary on appointment will be within the range £31,625 to £38,575 per annum depending on qualifications and experience. This is a fulltime contract for a period of 3 years.

For further information and details of how to apply, please visit our web site https://jobs.quadram.ac.uk or contact the Human Resources team on 01603 450462 or nbi.recruitment@nbi.ac.uk quoting reference 1003723.

The Institute supports equality of opportunity within the workplace and expects all employees to share and display these values. To support our commitment, we have a range of family, faith and diversity friendly working arrangements to help all staff achieve excellence in their area of work.

As a Disability Confident employer, we guarantee to offer an interview to all disabled applicants who meet the essential criteria for this vacancy.

The closing date for applications will be 31st July 2019
