About the Role

We’re looking for a Data Scientist to join our growing Data Science group. By bringing experience in data analysis, machine learning or natural language processing you’ll have the opportunity to collaborate with a range of industry partners from small start-ups to large multinational corporations. You will develop tools, frameworks and applications to accelerate the adoption of emerging technologies across a variety of sectors from life sciences to engineering and manufacturing. Working with teams across the Hartree Centre and IBM Research, you will help us deliver accessible, innovative and scalable solutions that address industry challenges and improve productivity. Projects will typically come from our Innovation Return on Research (IROR) programme which aims to create economic and societal impact by developing a suite of industry-relevant digital assets or ‘Bridging for Innovators’ B4I to deliver multidisciplinary solutions for businesses using our technologies. Projects may span over a few weeks or several years but will be delivered as part of a small team working closely with an industry partner.

If successful, you will join a growing team of expert data scientists, working closely with the HPC Software Engineering and Business Development teams to develop collaborative projects.

Duties will include:

  • building and mentoring small project teams to deliver on these project plans to deliver defined work plans for data science projects in collaboration with business development and customer representatives.
  • exploring technologies and designing appropriate technology solutions.
  • learning and applying data centric, analytics and AI technologies to industry challenges
  • validating project conclusions and using advanced data visualisation techniques to present results to customers
  • visiting clients and liaising with commercial partners to develop collaborations
  • developing strong links within the HPC and data science community by presenting and publishing non-confidential results and case studies, building both individual and Hartree Centre profiles
  • you will have the opportunity to work on a diverse range of projects, so an ability to communicate effectively with scientists, industrial clients and academic colleagues from different backgrounds is essential.
  • at Band E level you will have the opportunity to develop and manage a small team.

About You

You will be educated to degree level or equivalent in a mathematical, scientific, or computer science discipline. You will have experience in analysing data and using tools such as R or Python. While support from other members of the department is available, you should have a basic knowledge of coding and software engineering. Demonstration of knowledge and/or experience in machine learning, statistical analysis or artificial intelligence will be a distinct advantage.

You will need to work on diverse projects, so you should have good communication skills, in particular the ability to communicate effectively with colleagues from a variety of backgrounds, collaborators, and clients. Hartree Centre projects are be solution-focused, so you must be able to work to a plan and within a deadline.

To be considered at Band E, you should have experience of how to develop and manage a project with a small team and ideally experience of people management and developing technical staff. You should also have demonstrable experience with applying machine learning and/or statistical methods in practical situations. A postgraduate degree, or equivalent industrial experience, would be an advantage, as would experience of using clusters or supercomputers, and of data management.
