Official statistics are for the benefit of our society and the economy generally. They allow the formulation of better public policy and the effective measurement of those policies; they inform the direction of economic and commercial activities; they provide valuable information for analysts, researchers, public and voluntary bodies; and they are a vital element of how government and policy makers evaluate their policies and are held to account.

The past year more than ever has highlighted the opportunities for greater collaboration across the analytical, research and policy communities to inform good policy decisions that can improve the lives of people across the UK. The postholder will continue our ambitious work with the Economic Statistics Centre of Excellence (ESCoE) in researching and ensuring our economic statistics are maintained and developed to measure the modern economy, and with the ONS Data Science Campus to build cross government capability in data science. This challenging post has been critical throughout the pandemic in innovating statistical practises and providing information needed by decision makers and the public, leading our work enabling the use of data at ONS and across the GSS to provide information on the UK economy and society.

This role will be key in driving a new era for ONS and the statistical system, as we design the future economic and social statistics needed to rapidly assess a changing economy outside of the EU and recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic. This includes new and better statistics in as close to real-time as possible on trade, prices and gross domestic product (GDP) which have long been a challenge for the UK, even more so now that we are operating outside of the European Union (EU). It will also be critical in delivering the evidence base for Net-Zero and Levelling Up.

The seniority and focus of this post help equip ONS and government to better tackle the challenges associated with the necessary improvements in the publication of Economic and Social analysis, as well as adding clout to the leading role the UK statistical system has internationally in setting the standards for the international statistical system. The role has three inter-linked dimensions: to direct the continued development of economic and social statistics at ONS through the ARIES programme (Ambitious, Radical, Inclusive Economic Statistics), including the development of the nation’s key economic indicators such as GDP; to lead the coherence of the economic and social statistics across the wider GSS and Analysis Function; and be a key player in building strong strategic partnerships to catalyse new uses of data for policy development and service delivery.

We are an organisation that takes the well-being of its employees seriously and lives and breathes the desire to modernise the workplace of the future. Everyone, including our desk-based staff in Newport, Darlington, London and Titchfield, and our field interviewers and airports and ports passenger survey staff, are part of a diverse and inclusive family

The closing date is Tuesday 21st September 2021 at 11:55 pm.
