Application Deadline

This is an exciting opportunity to channel your passion for Innovation in the field of Statistics and Data Science to help shape the future of the Biostatistics function and transform the way in which GSK uses data and quantitative thinking to drive decision-making in R&D.

Biostatistics is the single-largest functional group of Statisticians, Programmers and Data Scientists within GSK R&D, numbering approx. 700 permanent people in the US, UK, Europe and India. Our mission is to put statistical thinking at the heart of R&D decision-making; to ensure that predictive models and well-designed experiments and trials deliver robust evidence as the input to those decisions – ultimately making the R&D process more efficient and increasing the probability of success. We are investing in our cutting-edge innovation capabilities by creating the new Statistics & Data Science Innovation Hub (SDS-IH) led by Prof Nicky Best.

SDS-IH’s mission is to build capability and deliver data-driven approaches to decision making across the organization. To achieve this vision we are creating new ways of working and rebalancing skills across Biostatistics: for example by creating agile teams to give complete focus to resolving data issues across R&D, and building new data pipelines, analytics and dashboards to enable senior stakeholders to take data-informed decisions in real-time. The SDS-IH team itself is a model for our vision, consisting of Statisticians and Data Scientists with a variety of different skills and backgrounds, working together to develop novel quantitative methodologies, systems and tools.

Why join the Statistics & Data Science Innovation Hub?

As Head of Advanced Biostatistics and Innovative Trial Designs, you will lead the Complex Innovative Designs capability pillar withing SDS-IH. Your team’s remit is to increase the efficiency of medicine and vaccine development at GSK by using expertise in state-of-the-art statistical methodologies combined with deep clinical development expertise to enhance the quality, robustness, and efficiency of clinical trial design, analysis, interpretation and decision-making across the R&D clinical portfolio.

Core responsibilities:

  • In partnership with project statisticians and senior statistics leaders in oncology, development and vaccines, identify, evaluate and implement novel / advanced clinical trial designs to enable robust data-driven decision-making and accelerate execution and delivery of the portfolio
  • Either on an asset or platform basis, engage with regulators to support discussions of novel late stage designs. Devise strategies which are likely to increase the regulatory acceptability of novel trial design approaches while still creating benefits for GSK.
  • Devise and implement a sustainable model for providing statistical consultancy to Biostatistics staff and clinical project teams to provide technical and strategic guidance on clinical study and programme development plans
  • Ad-hoc consultancy to senior R&D and GSK leaders on statistical design, analysis and interpretation issues
  • Participate in internal review committees as statistical SME independent from the study team
  • Create, develop and foster collaborations with external statistical experts and groups in order to achieve statistical innovation in clinical trial methodology and quantitative decision making within GSK
  • Represent GSK at key external regulatory or industry-wide strategic meetings as needed
  • Member of the SDS-IH Leadership Team with accountability for developing and driving the Complex Innovative Designs pillar strategy and ensuring alignment of priorities with the overall SDS-IH group and wider Biostatistics organisation.

Essential requirements:

  • PhD in statistics, mathematics, data science, computer science or related quantitative discipline.
  • International reputation in statistical methods both within industry and in academia, as evidenced by e.g. publications in major scientific journals, conferences or other scientific proceedings, active participation in relevant industry working groups.
  • Expertise in key statistical methodologies needed to drive innovation in drug development, such as complex adaptive designs and master protocols; Bayesian statistics and expert knowledge elicitation, evidence synthesis and data re-use; quantitative decision-making methodologies, complex clinical trial simulation.
  • Considerable leadership experience and proven record of achieving business impact by driving statistical change
  • Superb written and verbal communication skills and demonstrated ability to effectively communicate complex technical and statistical ideas to non-specialists
