A unique and career defining opportunity to lead an award-winning data science and engineering team and help unlock a deeper understanding of the world’s oceans.

About UKHO

UKHO is an executive agency, sponsored by the Ministry of Defence. We work with a wide range of data suppliers and partners, surveying and charting the world's oceans in order to develop and serve world leading software and data solutions to commercial shipping companies, navies and maritime organisations. Our products ensure safe navigation and global trade efficiency and support other marine activities including economic development, environmental protection, resource exploration and utilisation, scientific research and security and defence.

The data science and engineering team tackle problems such as addressing new data sources into the UKHO, e.g. Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR), existing and new oceanographic data sets, or Automatic Identification System (AIS) data. They then collaborate to use that raw data in new and novel ways to generate new insight and value add to inform business strategy and incorporate into new digital services or products.

Recent projects the team have worked on include:

  • Creating an award-winning global data set of Mangroves using serverless applications and deep learning
  • Automating the creation of a new coastline data set by combining satellite imagery and computer vision techniques
  • Improving how we process big data (Automatic Identification Systems data) to gain valuable insight into our oceans and how they’re used
  • Analysing over 1 million km² of ocean and finding around 500 previously unknown features.

The role

As a member of our senior management team, and the most senior expert in Data Science and Data Engineering in the UKHO, you will lead and grow an award-winning team to help deliver our strategy. You will work on developing an inclusive internal capability as well as working with external companies and resources to deliver transformational change. There is an expectation that you will collaborate on the technical work of the teams. Your role will be one of inspirational and supportive leadership to the team, setting the vision, prioritising the work, and upping the knowledge and technical capability of the data science function.

To succeed in this role, you will need to engage widely both internally within UKHO, and on the global stage with scientific collaborations; with Defence and wider government; and through academia and private industry to the oceanographic, maritime, and scientific communities.

This is a specialist role which requires excellent technical capability along with excellent leadership. You will be recognised for your ability to lead and develop those around you in an empathetic and inclusive manner. You will require the competencies and behaviours of an inspiring and confident leader, as well as having a strong grasp of mathematics and statistics. The development of strong interpersonal relationships will be key to your success.

In return

UKHO is a great place in which to explore your career potential. While our projects are career-defining, the work/life balance that we can offer you is equally exceptional. From flexitime, flexible working, an award-winning office environment and a generous annual leave allowance of 34.5 days including public holidays, the opportunities open to you here are hard to beat.
