In your role, you will have access to some of the richest data sources available in the UK and work collaboratively across teams and government departments to produce high quality analysis.
There is no requirement to have prior experience or knowledge of tax. These roles do not involve line management and would suit driven university graduates and those looking for a career change.

Knowledge, Analysis and Intelligence (KAI) is a directorate of around 600 analysts at the heart of HMRC. We provide analysis, research and statistics to inform policy and operational development, working closely with our partners across HMRC, HM Treasury and the Office for Budget Responsibility.

Job description
You will work on a breadth of projects that will require you to:
- Build new data solutions through the manipulation of multiple data sources to meet customer needs
- Engage with our customers to share analytical results, taking data limitations into account
- Deliver projects using robust project management and quality assurance
- Think creatively and initiative to help us test and develop new ideas and analytical techniques.

Essential criteria
You will need to demonstrate:
- You meet the entry requirements for the Government Statistical Group (GSG), please see the Qualifications section for details
- Ability to innovate to improve the quality or efficiency of processes (Changing and Improving)
- Ability to manage own workload and overcome challenges to ensure delivery of business outcomes (Managing a Quality Service)
- Ability to work as part of a team (Working Together)
- Experience in the practical application of analysis or research with a knowledge of data sources (GSG competencies: Acquiring data/Understanding customer needs; Data analysis)
- Good communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to communicate analysis to non-specialists (GSG competency: Presenting and disseminating data effectively).

Qualifications
Successful candidates must be eligible to become a member of the Government Statistician Group (GSG).
To qualify for membership of the Government Statistician Group (GSG) you must have one of the following:
• a first or second class honours degree in a numerate subject containing at least 25% taught statistical content (e.g. Statistics, Mathematics, Economics, Sciences, Business Studies, Psychology, Geography or similar) or
• a higher degree, e.g. a MSc or PhD, in a subject containing formal statistical training (e.g. Statistics, Mathematics, Economics, Sciences, Business Studies, Psychology, Geography or similar) or
• have worked in a statistical or data science field for at least two years and are able to demonstrate Continuous Professional Development (via a log book) in statistics or data science at the same level as a foundation degree or Higher National Diploma (level five) or
• have achieved or are on track to achieve a level four apprenticeship including at least two years in a statistical or data analysis field in government and are able to demonstrate Continuous Professional Development in statistics or data analysis (via a log book signed off by a manager or mentor who are members of the statistical profession)
