Application Deadline

The Department of Mathematics at Aarhus University - an international top 100 University – seeks candidates with excellence and vision in their research for a Professor position in Stochastics.

In 2019 the Department of Mathematics underwent a strategy review, resulting in 10 specific goals being set for the period 2020—2025. See here. The purpose of this call is to add a new professor to the Stochastics group who can help the department meet its strategic goals by the year 2025.

The Department of Mathematics currently employs 31 permanent scientific staff members in the traditional mathematical disciplines and stochastics. The Stochastic Research Group at the Department of Mathematics has 13 permanent faculty members covering statistics, probability, optimization, data science and a small group offering statistic consultancy to the biosciences.

The Department has a strong international profile in probability theory and mathematical statistics, and has close research ties to “Center for Research in Econometric Analysis of Time Series” (CREATES), at the Department of Economics and Business Economics, as well as to two interdisciplinary centers: “Aarhus University Centre for Digitalisation, Big Data and Data Analytics” (DIGIT), based at the Faculty of Technical Sciences, as well as “Bioinformatics Research Centre” (BiRC), based at the Faculty of Natural Sciences.

For the open position, we search for a person broadly within stochastics. Ensuring gender balance at the department is a high priority at Aarhus University, and we particularly encourage women to apply for this position. No candidate will be given preferential treatment, and all applicants will be assessed on the basis of their qualifications for the position in question. Note that female applicants would automatically contribute towards one of the department’s strategic goals, which is to improve gender balance.

The successful candidate should have:

  • A sterling and established international record of independent and collaborative research.
  • Status as a research leader within her/his field.
  • An established record in attracting funding for research projects.
  • An established and excellent record in teaching at all levels within the fields covered by the Stochastics group, ranging from undergraduate teaching to supervising PhD students.
  • The potential to help the department meet its strategic goals, see here.

The successful candidate is expected to:

  • Build and sustain an active research group around her/his research area through external funding.
  • Through her/his research contributions and activities, raise the international profile of the Department of Mathematics.
  • Contribute to teaching and supervision at all levels at the department.
  • Take on responsibility within the department through committee work.
  • Help the department meet its strategic goals, see here.

What the Department of Mathematics, the city of Aarhus as well as Denmark can offer the successful candidate:

  • A typical teaching load of 4-5 hours of lectures per week during the semester, plus project supervision.
  • Administrative support and professional guidance for submitting grant applications.
  • A positive and international work environment with a flat hierarchy.
  • Subsidized preschool child care and a free education system from primary school up to university level.
  • Universal health insurance as a resident of Denmark, including family members officially residing in Denmark.
  • Five weeks paid holiday per year.
  • In connection with child birth: the right to have a total of 52 weeks shared maternal/paternal leave with full or partial salary pay.
