We are a world class research-intensive university. We deliver teaching and learning of the highest quality. We play a leading role in economic, social and cultural development of the North East of England. Attracting and retaining high-calibre people is fundamental to our continued success.

We understand how important the full employment package is to our colleagues at Newcastle University and we are committed to providing a great range of benefits and discounts for all. You can learn more about what is available here on our Benefits Website page.

Applications are invited for three positions of Reader/Professor in Statistics or Statistical Data Science within the School of Mathematics, Statistics & Physics. The posts are open to researchers in all areas of statistics or data science that complement or extend existing expertise in the School. The Statistics Group is particularly keen to appoint in the areas of: computational statistics; biostatistics and related areas; and applied Bayesian modelling.

The Statistics Group seeks candidates who have track records of outstanding, innovative research, and who are dedicated educators. The successful candidates will have a genuine commitment to, and enthusiasm for research, teaching and the development of others, and will contribute to the academic life of the Statistics Group and the School in general.

Researchers within the Statistics Group have a wide span of interests. Research themes include Bayesian methodology for complex models; biostatistics; big data, scalability and computation; stochastic systems biology; and environmental statistics. We have many opportunities for statisticians to engage with researchers across a wide range of disciplines. We are a University Partner of the Alan Turing Institute (the national institute for data science) and have strong connections with the Newcastle-based National Innovation Centre for Data (NICD). We run an MSc in Statistical Data Science jointly with the School of Computing. Group members collaborate extensively with researchers from other disciplines within the University, including Engineering, Mathematics, Natural Sciences, Computing, and the Faculty of Medical Sciences.

We aim to achieve a diverse mix of colleagues that will enable us to:

  • bring new ideas and different perspectives to both teaching and research;
  • refresh our engagement with one another and challenge our thinking; and
  • provide more diverse role models, attracting a wider range of bright, active and engaged students.

We aim to attract applicants who will actively contribute to all aspects of the School, and who will be enthusiastic and committed to new ventures and innovations in both teaching and research. All applicants who fulfil the criteria are welcome. We are keen to offer opportunities, where possible, to colleagues from groups who are currently underrepresented in mathematical sciences in the UK.

Informal enquiries may be made to the Director of Statistics, Dr Tom Nye tom.nye@ncl.ac.uk or the Head of School, Dr Nick Parker nick.parker@newcastle.ac.uk. More information about the School can be found at http://www.ncl.ac.uk/maths-physics

Interviews will be held on 07 September 2022
