Professor/Reader of Statistics or Statistical Data Science Newcastle University

Newcastle University

Newcastle Upon Tyne, UK

Application Deadline

Applications are invited for the position of Reader / Professor in Statistics within the School of Mathematics, Statistics & Physics, with a flexible start date to be agreed. The position is open to researchers working in Statistics, as well as in fields that are closely related.

We are seeking a high-calibre scholar with an excellent track record of research and teaching, and who will strengthen or complement our Statistics group, which is internationally recognised for its strength in Bayesian statistics, statistical computation, biostatistics, machine learning, and applied statistics. The Statistics Group currently has 18 permanent academic staff, including 3 professors, with two new permanent staff recently appointed and joining us later in 2023. Research has been supported in recent years by, inter alia, BBSRC, CRUK, EPSRC, ESRC, EU, Leverhulme, MRC, NIHR and Wellcome.

We have many opportunities for statisticians to engage with researchers across a wide range of disciplines. We are part of the Alan Turing Institute and are linked with the £30 million Newcastle-based National Innovation Centre for Data (NICD). We are partners with the School of Computing in the development of a new MSc in Data Science and are heavily involved in the University development of Newcastle Helix, a £200 million project bringing together academia, the public sector, business, and industry on a new site in the heart of the city. Our NU Data Centre for Doctoral Training has just admitted its first intake and will run until 2028.

The successful candidate will be expected to carry out and publish high-quality research, attract and manage substantial research funding, contribute to other collaborative research programmes, and play a role in the teaching and administrative activities within the School.

Our aim is to employ a rich mix of people with different backgrounds that will help us to:

  • bring new ideas and different perspectives to both teaching and research
  • refresh our engagement with one another and challenge our thinking
  • enhance our collegiate environment
  • provide more diverse role models, attract a wider range of bright, active, and engaged students, and enhance our pastoral care

We are keen to attract applicants who will actively contribute to all aspects of the School, and who will be enthusiastic and committed to new ventures and innovations in both teaching and research. All applicants who fulfil the criteria are welcome. We are keen to offer opportunities, where possible, to people from groups who are currently underrepresented in mathematical sciences in the UK.

We are the proud recipients of an institutional silver Athena SWAN award and a unit-level bronze award, demonstrating our achievements and ongoing commitment to achieving gender equality. The University also holds the HR Excellence in Research award for our work to support the career development of our researchers.

Informal enquiries may be made to Prof Chris Oates at or Dr Murray Pollock at
