The Opportunity

We are seeking a postdoctoral Research Fellow for a 2-year position in natural language processing to join a research project on detecting, quantifying and preventing bias and unfairness in natural language processing applications. The research involves

  • systematic quantification of the extent of bias across NLP applications
  • derivation of theoretical bounds of bias in training datasets and learnt models
  • the development of new methods which are both more socially equitable, as well as less prone to expose private data in the learned representations

We invite applications from researchers passionate about natural language processing and fair machine learning to contribute to a research project with strong practical value.

The project is supervised by Professor Tim Baldwin, Professor Trevor Cohn, and Dr Lea Frermann. You will join a vibrant research environment in natural language processing and machine learning at Australia’s premier university.

Your Profile

We are looking for a passionate researcher with a strong motivation to deliver excellent research outcomes. You will possess outstanding communication skills with an ability to convey research concepts to a broad audience.

You will have:

  • A PhD in Natural Language Processing, Machine Learning, or related field, awarded or submitted for examination.
  • An emerging research track record and recognition of high-quality research outputs
  • Strong programming skills and the ability to implement practical systems along with experience in machine learning and/or computational linguistics.
  • Excellent communication skills and interpersonal skills.
