Our Data Science Team is seeking a Statistician / Senior Statistician to join our innovative team. The role, based in the Flood and Water Management Group, will support the group and the wider company on environmental consultancy and research projects that require statistical modelling or analysis of water-related data. Together with the rest of the team, it will drive key decisions in all relevant projects to be made based on solid data-driven evidence. In the longer run, this role will champion the company’s technical excellence in extreme value analysis, multivariate (joint probability) analysis, and other related areas.
The successful candidate will work closely with colleagues in the areas of flood and coastal risk management, sustainable drainage, water resources and international development – helping to expand our knowledge, tools and service offering to embed sound statistics in all we do. You will work with colleagues to shape and deliver water projects and research, being at the forefront of advancing innovative solutions and bringing lasting benefits to local communities and the environment.
Key qualifications and skills:
- Undergraduate or master degree in mathematics, statistics or equivalent;
- PhD degree and/or equivalent practical experience in statistical modelling or other topics with a significant proportion of statistical modelling;
- Extensive knowledge on at least one of the following topics: extreme value theory, multivariate analysis, time series model, spatiotemporal processes;
- Familiar with the key literature related to the extreme value analysis for environmental processes and aware of current academic research;
- Proficient in R or Python programming in Windows or Linux environment and practical experience with common IDEs e.g. RStudio, VS Code, etc.;
- Experience of R / Python package development and simple web-based deployment such as Shiny, Flask and Django;
- Knowledge or practical experience in statistical models for environmental variables such as rainfall, river flow, waves, wind, sea level, etc.; and
- Experience of academic publication with peer-reviewed journals.

- Excellent critical thinking and problem solving skills;
- Proven ability to analyse and write up data;
- Able to present complex statistical concepts to non-specialists;
- Confident in presenting to peers and at industry events;
- An enthusiasm for statistics and using these key approaches to enhance our portfolio of water projects; and
- A team player who is committed to consolidating and improve statistical knowledge and understanding across the Flood & Water Management Team.
