We have a new opportunity to provide senior leadership to AWE’s statistical capability, providing strategic direction and technical oversight to ensure that our statistical capability continues to meet the needs of our mission to support the nation’s nuclear deterrent and nuclear security.

AWE is an exciting place to be a statistician thanks to the extensive range of work we do.  Whether it’s the statistical design of high energy laser experiments, providing statistical evidence for nuclear safety assessments, or assessing the performance of state-of-the-art radiation detection systems there is always a rich variety of interesting and challenging statistical problems being solved.

As Statistics Technical Authority, you will ensure best practices in statistics are adopted and followed throughout the organisation, including development of AWE’s statistical governance and competency frameworks.  You will also be the company’s most senior subject matter expert in statistics, providing peer review and technical advice to senior decision-makers.  Although this is not a line management role, you will provide leadership and technical oversight to all staff engaged in statistical work at AWE.

Requirements for the role include:

  • Having a passion for excellence in statistics
  • Significant influential leadership experience
  • Extensive knowledge of the theory and practice of statistics, data visualization, and statistical computing
  • The ability to work under pressure, to tight deadlines, in a rapidly-changing environment
  • Experience of managing a team, and working strategically to further the objectives of an organization
  • Willing and able to obtain and maintain security clearance, and be able to undertake UK and overseas travel
