HEFCW’s Statistics Team is responsible for analysing and reporting on data related to higher education (HE) students, staff and finance in Wales, within HEFCW and externally. We also develop funding models and calculate funding allocations to HE providers. We are looking for a Senior Statistical Analyst to join our team of eight at a very exciting time as we prepare to transfer to the Commission for Tertiary Education and Research, the new arm’s length body responsible for overseeing and funding post-16 education and research from August 2024.

You will be responsible for analysing data, reporting on data, developing funding models, monitoring funding and providing advice and guidance to colleagues. You will be or become an expert in higher education data and have the skills and experience to effectively deliver the team’s activities relating to funding and analysis.

Educated to degree level (or equivalent), in a numerate degree such as mathematics or statistics, potentially also with a postgraduate qualification, you will be a team player, who is able to develop and maintain good working relationships with HEFCW colleagues, data contacts at higher education providers and external stakeholders such as Jisc, who collect the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA) records from higher education providers.

You will be able to work independently, take full responsibility for your work, develop solutions to problems, be experienced in carrying out analysis on large and complex datasets and be able to communicate your work effectively to a variety of audiences. The ideal candidate will have excellent attention to detail and be able to see the broader relevance of their work. Strong communication and listening skills are essential. You will have excellent IT skills, including in Microsoft Excel and data visualisation software such as Power Bi, and have programming experience in SAS or similar software. The ability to communicate bilingually in Welsh and English is desirable.

This post is full time but could be job share or part time (at 0.8FTE) for the right candidate and is also suitable for secondment.
