Do you want to contribute to improving human health?
The Department of Medical Epidemiology and Biostatistics (MEB) conducts research in epidemiology and biostatistics across a broad range of areas within biomedical science. The department is among the largest of its type in Europe and has especially strong research profiles in psychiatric, cancer, reproductive, pediatric, pharmaco, genetic, and geriatric epidemiology, eating disorders, precision medicine, and biostatistics.
Part of the success of our department is due to our collaborative spirit where one factor is that researchers at the Department share and co-finance common resources (e.g., IT and an applied biostatistics group). The department is situated at campus Solna. Further information can be found at http://ki.se/en/meb.
Your mission
We are looking for a biostatistician to work on a project on Myeloproliferative neoplasms, a group of cancers that affect the bone marrow and lead to overproduction of blood cells. MPN generally has a better prognosis than many other forms of blood cancer, but those with MPN have a higher tendency for thrombosis, bleeding and infections, and the disease can develop into acute myeloid leukemia.
The successful applicant will work with Therese Andersson, senior lecturer in biostatistics at MEB. Therese's research group conducts research in cancer epidemiology and biostatistics, primarily in cancer patient survival (https://ki.se/forskning/forskningsomraden-centrum-och-natverk/forskargrupper/statistiska-metoder-for-cancerpatientoverlevnad-therese-anderssons-forskargrupp). The group is part of a larger group of biostatisticians working with both applied biostatistics and method development, with approximately 40 employees. Also involved in the project is Anna Ravn Landtblom, hematologist and researcher at Karolinska University Hospital and Karolinska Institutet.
The current position is a fixed-term employment of 12 months, with the possibility of extension and also the possibility of working within MEB's highly qualified team of biostatisticians in the Applied Biostatistics group (ABS). Members of the ABS group work in research projects in a wide range of medical applications. The main task is to contribute statistical expertise to epidemiological research at MEB. This includes taking responsibility for planning, design and analysis of studies, as well as interpretation and presentation of results in scientific articles, in collaboration with the department's researchers, and providing practical support and supervision to researchers and doctoral students. There is also the opportunity to contribute to teaching at the department.
Your profile
We expect you to have a degree in statistics, mathematical statistics or a related field. We also expect you to have experience from planning studies and analysing data in medical research. As working with people in other professions is a large part of this job, you need to be structured and self-reliant, and able to work on multiple projects in parallel. Excellent communication skills and good command of spoken and written English are important. We expect you to be motivated to expand your knowledge in biostatistics, epidemiology and medicine, as required.
We consider experience in the following areas to be additional qualifications for this position: collaborative research, preferably in an international environment; statistical consulting; experience with survival analysis; the statistical software Stata; experience with registry data, especially cancer registry data; secure data management, research documentation and project organization.
