The Biostatistician helps facilitate the Biostatistics Department’s efforts to enhance the quality of research conducted at UAMS by providing expert statistical guidance to UAMS investigators. The Biostatistician commonly assists investigators with protocol and grant development, data analysis, statistical programming using software such as SAS, R or SPSS, and manuscript preparation, among others. The Biostatistician may also assist faculty in meeting the educational goals of the department.

The Biostatistician will work with investigators throughout the UAMS campus, often in partnership with Department faculty members and/or more senior research staff. This includes clinical researchers (primarily physicians), nursing, pharmacy, laboratory scientists, and public health and health policy researchers, among others. The Biostatistician will also maintain a close relationship with informaticists, database managers, and research administrators involved with a study.

Responsibilities

Protocol/Grant Development:

This position will be responsible for assisting investigators develop experimental designs that best address the research question, developing data analysis plans for each specific aim of the study, providing and justifying sample size estimates for the study, and providing appropriate subject allocation plans.

Data Analysis:

The Biostatistician will perform data analyses of research data. They will have occasion to work independently in these endeavors, as well as a part of a team under the supervision of departmental faculty. The Biostatistician will provide written reports to investigators explaining the statistical methodology and presenting and interpreting the results. Expertise in a statistical programming language is required, along with a working understanding of databases.

Educational Activities:

The Biostatistician will participate in the education activities of the Department as requested. This may
involve assisting with courses given through the Graduate School and the College of Public Health by means of lecturing, preparation and/or grading of assignments and exams, and hold office hours or help sessions. In addition, the Biostatistician may also be asked to provide “designer” lectures to COM/COPH faculty and staff.

Manuscript Preparation:

The Biostatistician will assist investigators in writing manuscripts once a research study is complete. This
includes writing sections of the manuscript that clearly and accurately describing the statistical methods used to analyze the data. The Biostatistician will also assist in writing/editing the results section of a manuscript. In addition, the Biostatistician may be asked to provide publication quality tables and graphics.

Administration:

The Biostatistician will be responsible for performing other duties, as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Statistics, Biostatistics or related field OR plus 2 years' experience in database and statistical software packages (e.g. Microsoft Access and SAS, SPSS or STATA), research, research reporting, or data analysis experience OR
  • Bachelor's degree plus 8 years' experience in database and statistical software packages (e.g. Microsoft Access and SAS, SPSS or STATA), research, research reporting, or data analysis experience required.
