Lead Data Scientist

easyJet

Luton, UK

Ref: 08590

easyJet has always been pioneering. We challenge to find new ways to make travel easy and affordable for our customers. With over 300 aircraft flying over 800 routes to more than 30 countries, we’re the UK’s largest airline, the fourth largest in Europe and the tenth largest in the world. Flying over 80 million passengers a year, we employ over 12,000 people. Its big-scale stuff and we’re still growing.

Our increasingly sophisticated use of data is a great example of our entrepreneurial spirit. We’ve got big plans for AI. From managing flight schedules, improving aircraft maintenance and predicting delays to analysing the millions of searches on our website and boosting flight club loyalty programmes – we truly value the predictive capability of AI and the benefits it brings for our customers. We are always eager to dive into the opportunities of rich datasets – and we have a lot of them!

In order to achieve our goal of becoming the most data-driven airline in the world, we are looking for someone who can help us lead our growing data science team and support the adoption of data products within business teams. Reporting to the Head of Data Science & Yield, the Lead Data Scientist will be responsible for people management as well as research and delivery of advanced analytics projects. This role will involve finding opportunities where advanced analytics can make a difference across easyJet by designing, creating and implementing predictive and prescriptive capabilities. Our goal is not only to support day to day processes, but also to tackle projects which aim to address specific business questions where a very analytical mind and the use of advanced methods might be required.

The role will allow you to engage with different parts of the business to understand where and how improvements can be achieved and will also offer opportunities to educate a growing analyst community within easyJet. It will also require you to keep up to date with the latest research in the field of data science, promote best practise across the business and identify and help develop future talent.

Requirements of the Role

What we’re looking for;

  • A logical thinker with a good analytical background, with an MSc or PhD in a scientific/engineering field (Statistics, Economics, Maths, Computer Science, Engineering, Physical Sciences).
  • 2+ years of experience as a data scientist or in a more senior role within a data science team.
  • Proven experience in working within complex commercial environments or organisations with a clear value added focus.
  • Ability to establish and maintain relationships with technical and non-technical stakeholders to drive product adoption.
  • Experience managing/mentoring and developing data scientists and/or analysts is desirable.
  • Ability to influence others and move towards a common vision or goal.
  • Proven experience in advanced statistical analysis, in predictive modelling and in applying machine learning in a variety of problems and scenarios in order to build data products.
  • Experience in using programming languages (Python, R, MATLAB, Scala, C derivatives, etc.) for statistical and machine learning analyses. Our default working languages are Python and R.
  • Knowledge of ETL processes and experience in SQL.
  • Experience in using cloud computing platforms and big data tools (e.g. Spark) is desirable.
  • Experience testing and validating statistical hypotheses.
  • Knowledge of Bayesian methods will be considered a plus.
  • Able to communicate findings to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Experienced team player who is able to work collaboratively with and through others.
  • Versatile individual who recognises uncertainty as a necessary part of working in a business environment and has a “fail fast and iterate” approach.

We want to inspire a whole generation to say ‘yes’ to new opportunities. To strike a chord with people who have the energy and passion to experience the world around them. People who don’t just wait around for things to happen. Already the UK’s largest airline, we’re as high-performing and fast-growing as businesses come. Our people are at the heart of our success, and we love sharing it with them. Travel perks, individually tailored benefits, packages linked to both your and the company’s performance – you’ll enjoy it all here. Not to mention the fantastic opportunity to drive your own development, all while sharing in our amazing success. It really is a career like no other.
