We have a post available to provide ongoing statistic inputs and analysis for projects within the King’s Technology Evaluation Centre (KiTEC). The post is based within the School of Biomedical Engineering and Imaging Sciences at St Thomas’ Hospital and will focus on technology evaluation work with KiTEC’s Artificial Inteligence Evaluation Unit (AIEU). The postholder will be responsible to the Director of KiTEC and work closely with the KiTEC team and other health economists and medical statisticians across the university.

The purpose of this roles is to provide statistics advice and analysis for a range of research projects and clinical studies conducted within the AIEU. The projects focus on cardiovascular and oncological disorders to facilitate the development of valuable AI, medical device and medical imaging technologies and to maximise their impact for patients and the healthcare economy. King’s Technology Evaluation Centre (KiTEC, http://www.kitec.co.uk/) uses its specialist Health Technology Assessment expertise to evaluate technologies for the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE).

Projects undertaken by KiTEC include systematic reviews, establishment of registers and databases, randomised controlled trials and assessment of innovative medical technologies and diagnostic procedures. As well as our work for NICE, there is an expanding programme of activity in support of NHS organisations and device manufacturers within the activity of the AIEU. The Centre promotes a culture of independent thinking, teamwork, and scientific excellence. The post would benefit from someone who has experience in medical imaging and/or clinical trials.

The aim of this role is to provide ongoing statistic support for the researchers within KiTEC, providing advice for project applications, performing ongoing statistical evaluations and contributing to assessments and reports for a range of different projects and studies. The job provides an opportunity to lead inputs in meta-analyses, clinical trial methodology and design, analysing real-world data, cost analyses, economic evaluations alongside trials, modelling, health technology assessment of medical devices and other large studies with direct impact on policy development in the NHS.

Key Responsibilities

Please note this post not an academic position. We are looking for a professional applied statistician / statistical scientist who can join a team of technology assessors and lead on the statistical aspects of a project. The main duties of the postholder will be to provide ongoing statistic support for the researchers within the Centres for a range of different projects and studies, including:

  • Providing advice for project applications,
  • Performing ongoing statistical evaluations
  • Contributing to assessments and reports
  • Taking day-to-day responsibility for the statistical aspects of specific studies (e.g. project planning and protocol development, study conduct, plans for all statistical analyses and liaising with the appropriate multidisciplinary teams to represent the statistics view).
  • Lead inputs in meta-analyses, clinical trial methodology and design, analysing real-world data, cost analyses, economic evaluations alongside trials, modelling, health technology assessment of medical devices and other large studies

The above list of responsibilities may not be exhaustive, and the post holder will be required to undertake such tasks and responsibilities as may reasonably be expected within the scope and grading of the post.

Skills, Knowledge, & Experience

Essential criteria

  • Formal qualification in statistics or discipline with a substantial statistical content
  • Good quantitative/statistical skills
  • Good knowledge of how to design tests and plan studies
  • Good understanding of modelling approaches used by medical statisticians
  • Knowledge and practical application of statistical packages such as Stata, R
  • Experience in applied medical and/or clinical research or medical imaging data analysis
  • Experience of producing high quality outputs (reports and publications) to short external deadlines
  • Experience of word processing, databases and spreadsheets
  • Experience of building and interpreting statistical models
  • Experience of statistical data analysis
  • Excellent written communication skills are paramount Desirable criteria
  • PhD in relevant area or equivalent experience
  • Knowledge of the healthcare system in the UK
  • Sound understanding of the design, conduct and analysis of clinical studies
  • Experience of decision modelling and meta-analysis
  • Publication record
